Employer: CSU Channel Islands: On Campus EmploymentExpires: 09/11/2025POSITION SUMMARY:We are seeking a diligent and highly organized student assistant to support the ESRMTechnician in various aspects of their role. The ESRM Technician plays a crucial role inoverseeing classroom, laboratory, and field activities within the ESRM program. Thestudent assistant will contribute to supporting instruction, ensuring safety, maintainingequipment, and facilitating field-based efforts across campus.RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:The student assistant will collaborate with the ESRM Technician and contribute to thefollowing key responsibilities:1. Supporting Instruction:• Assist in managing equipment inventory control systems.• Contribute to the organization and archiving of geospatial data and imagery.• Assist with maintaining ESRM facilities, including the greenhouse and samplearchives.• Preparing, cleaning, and organizing lab supplies for weekly ESRM courses.• Assist in seeking vendor sources and building vendor relationships for uniquematerials.2. Safety:• Assist in maintaining a chemical inventory database.• Monitor for regulated substances and help oversee chemical waste disposal.• Contribute to proper storage of chemicals by hazardous class.• Support compliance with federal and state laws and regulations related to safety.3. Maintaining Operations & Equipment:• Assist the Lab Technician and Lab Coordinator with routine cleaning, testing,calibration, and installation of equipment components.• Support the calibration of locally deployed environmental sensors and thearchiving of associated data.• Assist in ensuring that UAV and ROV units are in proper working order andsecurely stored.• Provide support in securing permissions for field activities.4. Supporting Field-Based Efforts:• Assist with fieldwork at various locations, including University Park, Long GradeCreek, Santa Rosa Island, and other nearby sites.• Contribute to public planting days, class activities, and interdisciplinarycollaborations.• Aid in securing permits and clearances for field activities.5. Additional Responsibilities:• Perform other duties as required to support the ESRM program.SUPERVISOR/OTHER WORK RELATIONSHIPS:The student assistant will work closely with the ESRM Lab Technician and LabCoordinator and maintain working relationships with the Program Chair, ESRM faculty,support technicians in the sciences, Information Technology services, facilities staff,Receiving, and the campus Environmental Health and Safety staff.REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION:Education: Enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program in ESRM or a related scientificdiscipline from an accredited university.Experience: Relevant experience is desirable but not required. The student assistant willreceive training and guidance from the ESRM Technician and Lab Coordinator.Knowledge and Abilities:• Ability to work effectively in a team.• Attention to detail and organizational skills.• Eagerness to learn and adapt to new situations.• Willingness to work in an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.PHYSICAL DEMANDS:The role may involve work on campus and at various field sites, requiring the studentassistant to be in good physical condition and capable of traversing varied landscapes.Some lifting and outdoor activities may be required occasionally.ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:• Completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) may berequired for this position.Note: This is a student assistant position and may be subject to change based on the needsof the ESRM program.
